Hader Farm Featured on Our NWA:

This year, we are overjoyed to welcome Agnieszka Mulholland–host of Our NWA, the Northwest Arkansas Podcast–as one of our CSA members.  Agnieszka’s podcast highlights all of the best goings-on and things-to-do in Northwest Arkansas and celebrates the local places, people, and community events that define our home. Agnieszka graciously invited Farmer Kathy for an interview on her podcast.  You can listen to that interview or further support Agnieszka’s local podcast by clicking the links below:

The Great Log Relocation:

Farmer Peter and Farmer Kathy extend a hearty and heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the 22 dear friends and family members who on Saturday, the 21st, moved thousands of sticks and logs across the Hader Farm property.  These volunteers carried wood from the side of the garden, where Farmer Peter felled over 50 trees to make room for new crops, all the way to the south edge of the farm, where they were laid in perfectly level terraces to slow down rainfall during heavy storms on our sloped landscape.
The lanes that were formed by these terraces will become grazing paddocks for our sheep.  The logs will also help to anchor hundreds of trees that will eventually be able to thrive there.  Some of these trees will be fruit-bearing; others will provide fodder for livestock, and still others will support the holistic ecosystem by nurturing the fertility of other species and promoting genetic diversity.
With the sticks and logs all cleared, Farmer Peter still has lots of stumps to grind.  The cleared area will double next year’s growing space.  Until then, however, when the stumps are all gone, cover crops will be planted in their space to build soil structure and enhance the fertility of the ground in anticipation of 2027.

In Anticipation of Spring:

Seedlings:

Inside the farmhouse, under the glow of grow-light lamps, our seedlings are sprouting nicely.  This year, we are using soil blocks instead of plastic containers to start our plants, which means less plastic in our production and improved seedling health for our crops.  Double-win!

Dandelions:

Outside the farmhouse, spring is quietly arriving at Hader Farm.  This dandelion is not only one of the first signs of life that is returning to the farm; it also performs the critical role of mining for calcium and pulling it to the surface so that other plants and soil microbes can feast on this nutrient.
